A Year in Review Top Literary Moments of2017 Literarily speaking, 2017 was packed with as much drama as a bestselling novel. We saw dire dystopian books fly off the shelves, a piece of short fiction break the internet, and a trollish alt-right personality battle it out with an ex-publisher. There was scandalous bestseller manipulation- caught red-handed in real time- and gloves torn off for the soul of our countrys libraries. Kazuo Ishiguro Wins the 2017 Nobel Prize in Literature British author Kazuo Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize in Literature this year. Nominated alongside authors Margaret Atwood and Haruki Murakami, Ishiguro won unexpectedly, most shockingly to himself. Despite his fairly small literary output, the author of The Remains of a Day and Never Let Me Go is now in the company of legendary literary figures including Toni Morrison and Pablo Neruda. While the win is a personal victory for Ishiguro and a huge step in his career, it also symbolizes the progress of untraditional, speculative fiction- a genre that is often overlooked, especially in a literary community that values realistic fiction. So what’s next for Mr. Ishiguro? Well, between a new novel, several film adaptations of his books, and a couple of theater projects in the works, it’s safe to say that we will be seeing and reading a lot more of Kazuo Ishiguro. 2. Overwhelming Success of Atwood’s (and Hulu’s)  The Handmaid’s Tale Over 30 years after its original publication, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale seems to be influencing every corner of pop culture. From the runway to the women’s march, Atwood’s novel has resurged to the top of various bestseller lists. With book sales rising above 200 percent, it is one of the most widely read and talked about books of the year. Part of its success can be attributed to Hulu’s award-winning adaptation of the novel as well as its chilling relevance to the current political climate. With a second season already in the works, it’s safe to say that we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of The Handmaid’s Tale in 2018. photo via amNewYork 3.   Dystopian Novels Dominate Bestseller Lists   After the presidential inauguration, dystopian novels have become quite comfortable atop multiple bestseller lists. Nearly 70 years after its initial publication, George Orwell’s 1984 found its way to the number one spot on Amazon’s bestseller list for weeks. A notable surge began after advisor to the president Kellyanne Conway defended the use of â€Å"alternative facts† (also known as lies, untruths, or total fabrications- take your pick), which readers were quick to point out echoed Orwellian language. In 1984, facts are suppressed and distorted, and lies are manufactured by the â€Å"Ministry of Truth.† Origins of Totalitarianism*, Brave New World, and Fahrenheit 451  also soared to the top of bestseller lists. Uneasy about the future, readers are gobbling up decades-old works that are undoubtedly speaking volumes to them at this point in time. *While not a novel, this important, non-fiction work by Hannah Arendt topped bestseller lists as well. photo via APR 4.     Scandalous New York Times Bestseller Manipulation Controversy Lani Sarem’s debut book, Handbook for Mortals, was pulled from the number one spot on the New York Times Young Adult bestseller list after accusations of the authors buying her way onto the coveted list. Never heard of it? Neither did anyone else until it topped the list with book sales skyrocketing to over 18,000 copies. Young Adult author Phil Stamper was the first to question the sudden success of the novel due to its unusual trend in book sales and its overwhelming out-of-stock status on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Ultimately, it was concluded that the author or publisher made a strategic effort to place bulk orders for the book amongst book distributors that influence the Times bestseller reports. While this whole situation is awfully suspicious, Sarem and her team continue to deny all allegations. You will not see Handbook for Mortals on the Times bestseller list, but rumor has it that the film franchise is coming soon. photo via The Inquirer 5. The First-Ever Translation of The Odyssey  by a Woman is Published One of the oldest and longest poems in the Western tradition, Homer’s The Odyssey, was first composed in Latin around 700 BCE. Several centuries later, Emily Wilson, a professor of classical studies at the University of Pennsylvania, is now the first woman to publish an English translation of the ancient epic. While there have been multiple English translations of the text, Wilson is the first one to adapt it to a woman’s perspective. In 400 years of versions of the poem, no translator has made the kinds of alterations Wilson has. Wilson explored the dynamic of the female characters and how they are presented in the poem. While most translations place the female characters into a singular category empowered by beauty and seduction, Wilson illuminates the dynamic, complex nature of these women that dismiss traditional gender roles. Wilson’s translation goes far beyond just a feminist interpretation of the text- offering contemporary insight into a timeless piece of literature that continues to be referenced and researched across the world. photo via SCMP 6. A Nationwide, Impassioned Fight for Libraries Began The Trump administrations budget proposal for 2018 included drastic cuts for domestic programs regarding the arts, humanities, and public media. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is the source in which a majority of federal programs are distributed by each state. Federal funding is crucial in giving libraries across the country financial support for their communities. If the budget is implemented, the proposed budget cuts would diminish programs that support student literacy, job training, business expansion, entrepreneurship, veterans’ assistance, high†speed internet access, and millions of library patrons in communities everywhere. Individuals all around the country are vowing to fight these prospective changes for the sake of the current and future generations. photo via Study Break 7. â€Å"Cat Person† Broke the Internet   Kristen Roupenian’s short story â€Å"Cat Person† set the internet aflame since its online publication in early December in The New Yorker. The story recounts a young female student’s disappointingly lackluster sexual encounter with a 30-year-old man. The praise and criticism of the story dominated online discussions for weeks since publication. Many women feel that this story is relatable and shines light on bigger issues regarding the stigmas and stereotypes attached to a woman’s exploration of her sexuality. Regardless of how one may interpret â€Å"Cat Person,† it undoubtedly inspired countless constructive discussions that have contributed to our current national discourse. No matter what, were totally here for thoughtful dialogue around a piece of fiction on Twitter. photo via Elle 8.   Simon Schuster vs.  Milo Yiannopoulous Right-wing personality Milo Yiannopoulous sued Simon Schuster for $10 million dollars after they canceled his contract for his controversial book  Dangerous. Yiannopoulous decided to self-publish the memoir after Simon Schuster dropped him back in February (after ongoing criticism that they had granted him a book deal in the first place). After news spread of Yiannopoulous’s initial six-figure advance with the publishing company, editors, authors, and readers began threatening to boycott Simon Schuster if they continued to support the project. The author of Bad Feminist, Roxane Gay, pulled her upcoming title, How To Be Heard, to avoid any association with Yiannopoulous- or any publishing company that would support his work. While Dangerous ended up getting published in July, sales were low and unwelcomed. The #MeToo Movement Becomes a Powerful Storytelling Force The #MeToo movement was voted Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2017. While the hashtag was created over ten years ago by activist Tarana Burke, it was this year that the hashtag rose to prominence in the wake of accusations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and other accusations against many powerful men in media and politics. The movement has inspired numerous individuals to break their silence and share their haunting experiences with the public. Women have come forward from all walks of life to share their personal accounts of sexual harassment and assault- most notably in the workplace. While each individual’s story is unique to their experience, their voices would not be recirculated and shared to the extent it has without the help from countless journalists, writers, and publishers who are dedicated to promoting a culture of truth. We may have crawled our way to the finish line, but the good news is 2017 is officially over. We embrace the fresh start of a new year and try to establish an optimistic perspective on what’s ahead. While it’s difficult to find comfort in our current political climate, we can look forward to many things on the literary horizon. Some of our favorite books like Ready Player One and A Wrinkle In Time will be hitting the big screen, new work will surface from some of our most beloved writers including Zadie Smith and George R.R Martin, and surely  new voices will strive to make their imprint on contemporary culture. Research on Art Therapy Treatment for Schizophrenia CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Schizophrenia is a common psychiatric disorder. One to one point five percent of the total population suffers from schizophrenia. The severity of the symptoms and chronic patterns of schizophrenia often causes a high degree of disability. Most of those affected by schizophrenia respond to drug therapy and many are able to lead productive and fulfilling lives. Studies have shown that genetics, neurobiology, environmental, psychological and social factors are important contributory factors of schizophrenia. Some of the recreational activities and medications might cause or worsen symptoms. Researchers in the psychiatric field are now focused on the role of neurobiology, but no single organic cause has been found. Genetic causes could put a person at higher risk for developing schizophrenia and stressful life events could trigger onset of the symptoms. (Sahebarao mahadik, 2008) Schizophrenia is characterized a constellation of distinctive and predictable symptoms. The symptoms that are not commonly associated with the disease are called positive symptoms and negative symptoms. These symptoms will lead to isolation in the patients. Most of them have no insight in to their illness. So they need effective treatment. Complete cure is difficult in case of schizophrenia. So preventive measures and early detection can be focused. They appear to be popular with patients and may result in improved mental health; especially reductions in negative and general symptoms of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia ranks among the top 3 causes of disability in developed countries worldwide. The main leading cause of mental disability is schizophrenia. The prevalence rate for schizophrenia is 1.1% of the population. It means at any one time 51 million people worldwide suffer from schizophrenia, including 6-12 million people in China, 4.3-8.7 million people in India, 2.2 million people in USA, 285,000 people in Australia, 280,000 people in Canada, 250,000 diagnosed cases in Britan. Rates of schizophrenia are generally similar from country to country about 0.5 to 1% of the population. Another way to express the prevalence of schizophrenia at any given time is the number of individuals affected per 1000 total population. In india,prevalence rate of schizophrenia is 7 per 1000 population. The number of people who will be diagnosed as schizophrenia in a year is about one in 4000. So about 1.5 million people will be diagnosed with schizophrenia in one year, worldwide.(WHO,2012). Negative symptoms of schizophrenia are anhedonia, avolition, blunting affect and alogia. ASSUMPTIONS Schizophrenic patients may face difficulties with positive and negative symptoms. Schizophrenic patients may not be aware of Creative Art Therapy. Creative Art Therapy will be helpful in reducing positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenic patients. HYPOTHESIS H1: schizophrenia patients who receive Creative Art herapy will show a significant reduction in positive symptoms than the patients who do not receive it. H2: schizophrenia patients who receive Creative Art Therapy will show a significant reduction in negative symptoms than the patients who do not receive it. LIMITATIONS The study is limited to, Schizophrenic patients admitted in kongunadu Mananala Arakattalai. Methodological limitations such as small sample size and purposive sampling technique. CONCEPTUAL FRAME WORK The concept is a thought, idea or mental image framed in mind on response to learning something new. A frame work is a basic structure supporting anything. Conceptual frame work deals with abstraction which is assembled by nature of their relevance to a common theme. (Christenson j Paula, 2002). A conceptual frame work is global ideas about the concept in relation to a specific discipline. Conceptual modes are made up of concepts which describe the mental image of phenomena and integrate them in to a meaningful configuration. It is a visual diagram by which the research explains the specific area of interest. One of the important purposes of conceptual frame work is to communicate clearly the relationship of various concepts. (Kerlinger K N, 2002). In this study the researcher adopted modified j w Kenny’s open system model (1991) as a basis for conceptual frame work. according to j w Kenny ,all living systems are open and their in continuous exchange of matter,energy and information,which result in various degree of interaction with the environment from which the system receives input and gives back output in the form of matter,energy and information. System model consists of three phases ie,input throughput and output. Input Based on j w Kenny input can be matter energy and information from the environment. In the present study, environment refers to hospital and input refers to positive and negative symptoms in experimental and control group of patients by using PANSS and collection of demographic data and clinical data from both the group. Throughput According to the theorist, the matter, energy and information is continuously processed through the system, which is also called complex, transformations known as throughput. Process is the use of input i.e. energy and information for the maintenance of homeostasis of the system in the present study. Process includes the providing creative art therapy to experimental group and no intervention to the control group. [[ Output J.W.Kenny noted after processing the input, the system returns to the output (matter, energy and information) to the environment in an altered state. Change is a feature of the process that is observable and measurable as output, which should be different from that which is entered in to the system. In the present study, output is difference in the positive and negative symptoms. Feedback According to the theorist, information of environmental responses to the system, output is utilized by the system in adjustment, correction and accommodation to the interaction with the environment. The First World War (WWI) :: World War 1 I One

During World War One, the role of airplanes and how they were used changed greatly. At first planes were only used for sport, but people started realize that not only could airplanes be useful but they could even influence an outcome of the war greatly. Soon the war was filled with blimps, planes, and tethered balloons. By the end of the war, planes became a symbol of fear, but they were not always treated with such respect. In the time leading up to the war, the general feeling about planes was, they were a sneaky, unfair tactic that should not be used in warfare. During The 1899 Hague Peace Conference it was put on record that the dropping or shooting of any projectiles or explosives from the air during a time of war was forbidden and was considered a crime of war. It was also decided that airplanes could only be used for reconnaissance or spying missions. (Villard-227) â€Å"The airplane may be all very well for sport, but for the army it is useless† (Quoted in Villard-227) Even by the beginning of the war in 1912, the use of planes in war was still prohibited by the War Office. Shortly thereafter this changed, people awakened to the possibilities of air warfare. The world soon started to realize the effectiveness of planes in war and how the control of the skies could influence the outcome. Although the French were the first to have a working, conscripting air force and to license fliers, their trust in airplanes still was not up to par. Their lack of trust was justified, for the planes had no armaments, too many wires, and no reliable motor. (Villard-228) Soon all countries in the war effort had their own little air force, built hangers, and started to train pilots. The first bombing occurred in November 1911. Although the first bomb was dropped by the Italians, soon all countries were involved in bombing raids. (Villard-229) It was followed by the first aerial dogfight in 1912. This consisted of a primitive exchange of pistol fire between British and German planes . (Harvey-95) The first flying experience for the United States occurred in 1862, during the Civil War. General McClellan went into battle against the South with a balloon corps floated by hydrogen and pulled by four horses. (Saga-51) Literary fiction started to breed ideas about the use of planes in warfare. The most famous writer to explore the idea was H.G. Wells. He wrote The War In The Air, a book about the future in which battle is conducted with planes. (Wohl-70). In Germany, literary fiction preceded the actual development of warfare in the air.

President of the United States Essay

The President of the United States, the chief executive officer of the federal government, the leader of the executive branch, and the commander in chief of the armed forces has certain constitutional powers. How much power does he really have? Does he have too much? Does he have too little, or not enough? In my opinion, I believe that the President of the United States of America has just enough power to run our country, deal with foreign and domestic policies, and fight the War on Terror In this essay, I will discuss my opinion, what the president’s powers are under the Constitution, and whether or not the president’s role has expanded beyond these powers in domestic and foreign policy. Under Article II, Section 2 and Section 3 of the Constitution, it outlines the powers and duties of the president. The President holds two main roles: he is the Head of State and is the Chief of Government. The powers and duties that fall under these roles are identified as two main sources of power; his expressed powers and his delegated powers. The expressed powers are specifically defined powers that cannot be revoked by Congress or any agencies without an amendment to the Constitution. The delegated powers are the powers given to the president by Congress. Examples of expressed powers are the authorization to make treaties, grant pardons, and nominate judges and other public officials. The president also has the power to receive ambassadors and command the military forces of the United States. The delegated powers under Article II of the Constitution state that the President â€Å"shall take Care that Laws be faithfully executed†. These powers delegate that the President will only have the authority to carry out decisions through identification and development. Out of every country in the world, our president is the only one with both roles as the Head of State and Chief of Government. A third power, that is not stated in the Constitution, but is claimed occasionally by the President are inherent powers. The inherent powers are said to stem from â€Å"the rights, duties and obligations of the presidency†. These powers are exercised by presidents in times of war or national emergency. One of the President’s biggest powers that are applied as part of his inherent powers is the power to declare war. The President’s express powers are divided into five categories. The five categories are: Military, Judicial, Diplomatic, Executive, and Legislative. Beneath the Military category, it affirms that under Article II, Section 2; the President is provided the power as â€Å"Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States and of the militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States. † Beneath the Judicial category, it affirms under Article II, Section 2; the President is provided the power to â€Å"grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment.† Beneath the diplomatic category under Article II, Section 2; the President is provided the power â€Å"to make Treaties by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate. † Additionally, under Article II, Section 3; the President is provided the power to â€Å"receive Ambassadors and other Public Ministers. † Beneath the Executive category, it affirms under Article II, section 3; the President is authorized to see to it that all laws are faithfully executed. Additionally, Section 2 gives the chief executive power to appoint, remove, and supervise all executive officers and to appoint all federal judges. Under the Legislative branch, it affirms under Article 1, section 7 and Article II, Section 3 that the President has the power to participate authoritatively in the legislative process. The military authorities granted to the President are amongst the most important powers granted to someone leading the United States of America. As the President of the United States, you are granted the position as commander in chief. The position of commander and chief deems the President the highest military authority in the United States with control of the entire defense establishment. Additionally, the President is head of the nation’s intelligence network, which includes the CIA, NSC, NSA, and the FBI, which are among the most well regarded intelligence networks in the world. The constitution is the main principle in giving President’s the power to declare war; however, many Presidents’ decide to capture this power for themselves without consulting Congress. This is a resolution of Congress that the President can send troops into action abroad only by authorization of Congress, or if American troops are already under attack. For example, when President Bush responded to the attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York on September 11th, 2001 he ordered a major military campaign to overthrow the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Again in 2002, President Bush ordered a huge American campaign against Iraq to overthrow the Iraqi dictator, Saddam Hussein, whom he believed had links to the terrorist network that attacked the United States. President Bush publically made it a point to state that he did not need Congress’s authorization to declare war against organizations deemed an imminent threat against the United States of America. This is what is called the War Powers Resolution. The Judicial Powers granted to the President of the United States give him or her power to grant reprieves, pardons, and amnesties. Additionally, it involves power over all individuals who may be a threat to the security of the United States. Presidents may use this power to grant a reprieve on behalf of a particular individual. An example of reprieve for one particular individual would be when President Gerald Ford granted a pardon for former President, Richard Nixon, for â€Å"all offenses against the United States which he †¦ has committed or may have committed.† The Diplomatic Powers declare that our President is also our countries â€Å"Head of State†, or its chief representative when dealing with other countries. The title of Head of State grants the President the power to make treaties for the United States. The power of receiving Ambassadors and other Public Ministers was pushed through Congress under President Washington’s leadership in 1793. This power allows the President almost unrestricted authority to review the claims of any new ruling groups to determine whether they indeed control the territory and population they claim is theirs. The Executive Power, which is another one of the most important power’s as chief executive states that the President must ensure that all laws are faithfully executed. Additionally, this appoints the President to assign, remove, and supervise all executive officers and federal judges. These powers, under the Constitution, basically appoint the President as the true Chief Executive Officer of the United States. Another component the President is granted as chief executive is â€Å"executive privilege†. Executive privilege claims that confidential communications between the President and close executives are to be kept confidential and are not to be revealed without express permission for the President. The Legislative Power is broken down into two Constitutional provisions. The first of these provisions is under Article II, Section 3 of the Constitution and it states that the President â€Å"shall from time to time give to the Congress information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.† The second provision states the President has the power to veto. The veto is the President’s constitutional power to turn down acts of Congress. Other powers that are granted to the President are his â€Å"Delegated Powers. † These powers are not found in the Constitution but are product of congressional statutes and resolutions given to the President over the last century. The delegation of powers has been an almost inescapable consequence of the expansion of government activity in the United States. In conclusion, my belief is that the president has just enough power to run our country, deal with foreign and domestic policies, and fight the War on Terror. Because of the President’s two main sources of power, which are his express powers and delegated powers, it enables him to fulfill his duties and obligations without having too much power over our government and legislation.
